Casino Royale, The First James Bond Book
One of the reasons for the success of Casino Royale - the first of the James Bond books - and the entire success of James Bond is the combination of girls, guns, fast cars and exotic locations, all of which combined to produce a mixture that was unlike anything seen before by 1950s readers.
This first book provided an escape for British readers who were still accustomed to the privations of WWII with Casino gambling, food that could only be dreamt of and villains who played by cold war rules. One of the big differences between the books and the films is the lack of gadgets in the former, although that wasn't always the case.
In Casino Royale the gadgets are missing completely, although it does cross 007's mind that he might be able to extricate himself from a problematic situation if only he had a hidden weapon, with nothing to save him but his wits or just plain luck; when both of those appear to fail him he hopes for a quick death.
Compared with the films that came the following decade, the plot of Casino Royale has a straightforward plot which is easy to follow. With a single location too, it is a far cry from the continent hopping secret agent we are accustomed to today.
Although northern France might not seem a particularly exotic location today, Normandy casinos were only for the wealthy in the days before mass tourism, bearing in mind that post war rationing was still in place when the book was published.
And anyone expected a bed hopping Bond is likely to be surprised. Vesper Lynd is a beautiful brunette who initially is quite aloof towards Bond. However, Vesper thaws out and James Bond falls in love with her, and gets close to marrying her. It is only at the novel's end that we find out that she wasn't all she appeared to be and rather than helping Bond had actually betrayed him.

What is the name of the coastal village or area in which the James Bond book "Moonraker" is set?
I believe the book contains Hugo Drax, a card cheater, and may describe a lighthouse. If anyone knows the name of the lighthouse I would be very grateful!

MI6 Chief M, asks James Bond to observe Sir Hugo Drax, who is winning a lot of money playing bridge at Blades, M's favourite club; M suspects Drax to be a cheat. Although M claims indifference, he is concerned why a multi-millionaire, and national hero, such as Sir Hugo would cheat at a card game. Later, Bond confirms Drax's deception, and manages to 'cheat the cheater' — aided by a cocktail of powdered Benzedrine mixed with non-vintage champagne — winning £15,000 and infuriating the out-smarted Drax.
As it turns out, Drax is the backer of the 'Moonraker' missile project being built to defend the UK against its Cold War enemies (c.f. the real Blue Streak missile). Essentially, the Moonraker rocket is an upgraded V-2 rocket using liquid hydrogen and fluorine as propellants; it can withstand the ultra-high combustion temperatures in its engine thanks to the use of columbite, on which Drax has a monopoly. Therefore, because the rocket's engine can withstand higher heat, the Moonraker can use more powerful fuels, greatly expanding its effective range. Partly due to the card cheating episode, M orders Bond to infiltrate Drax's missile-building organization on Romney marsh on the coast of England. Once inside, Bond uncovers clues to a yet undiscovered plot to destroy London. Also, while working undercover Bond meets a beautiful agent called Gala Brand.
