is dutch better/easier to learn than german?
see i want a Germanic language that helps me understand the roots of English and that i might actually use for some purpose.
german, dutch? what?
The grammar of Dutch is a bit easier to understand than the German grammar. For the rest there aren't many differences in learning either language.
I'd pick German, if I were you, simply because it serves more purpose for it having a much larger amount of people that speak it. Also, if you ever wanted to travel to either Holland or Germany, you'd see that most Dutch people speak English, while most German people don't.
