The King James Version Bible
With more than six billion copies in print, the Bible is undoubtedly the best-selling book in history. Made up of a collection of Holy Scriptures given by God, the Bible serves as a tool that introduces and teaches believers to His Word. The text, chapters and overall content of the Bible varies between denominations, as some religions carry beliefs that differ from others. But despite the varying lengths and content of each Bible, the messages are all connected, for the purpose of the Bible is to enable believers to get one step closer to God.
Over time the Christian versions of the Bible have been tweaked and modified to fit the beliefs of various Christian groups. For example, the Protestant teachings come from 66 books of the Bible, while the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible carries 81 books.
But perhaps the most well-known translation of the Christian Bible is the King James Version, which is commonly referred to as the KJV. Used by a number of denominations, the King James Version Bible is also known as the Holy Bible, the Authorized Version or the King James Bible. Its name stems from King James I of England, who authorized the order for a new, clean English version of the Bible after earlier translations proved to have minor problems.
Between 1604 and 1611, members of the Church of England translated the KJV Bible from Greek and Hebrew to English. King James insisted that this new version reflect the Church of England's beliefs.
Soon after its inception, the King James Version translation quickly became the standard for most of the English-speaking population. Its flowing language and writing style proved to be influential in literary works over the next 300 years. Another example of the KJV's influence is the fact that it has provided more idioms to the English language than any other source. Today, the KJV Bible continues to reign in popularity and boasts 66 books, 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses.
The King James Version can be purchased at any Christian bookstore location. The accessibility of the internet has also made it possible to order KJV books online. Most bookstores will also provide consumers the option of buying the CD version of the KJV translation. It's convenient to have the Bible on CD so that you can listen to it in the car during those long commutes. My preacher makes a big deal about being "A bible Believin', King James readin' Christian."
The King James version was produced by a panel of more than a dozen different men who were given a list of guidelines to make the Bible available to the people of England in the early 1600's. Most of the pastors who make claims of infallibility of the KJV have never even seen a 1611 and therefore have revisions of the original KJV.
The other versions, (two of my favorite being the New American Standard and the New International Version) have been produced more recently using the original manuscripts to give us a more readable copy of the scriptures. No one speaks in 1611 Queens English anymore.
