Film Review: the Relic

It’s hard to believe that this is the only film that has been adapted from a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child novel considering The Relic was one of the best genre films of 1997. Upon its release it was fresh, inventive, and funny where it needed to be while still managing to be surprising and terrifying.

Character actor Tom Sizemore (in rare form as the lead) is Lt. Vincent D’Agosta who is brought in to investigate several murders at the local museum in which Dr. Margo Green (Penelope Ann Miller) is a witness. It also doesn’t help that these new murders are similar to those of another case he’s working on leaving him to believe that a serial killer is within their mists. Margo heads up a different lead in the mystery coming to the conclusion that the murdered man not be human as a genetic anomaly leads her to believe that the murderer is in fact some type of “chimera” creature that is a mixture of multiple animals and insects and possibly human. When D’Agosta and Margo try to shut the museum down in order to do a thorough search for the murderer they get trapped inside the museum with a hundred guests on the night of the grand opening of an important exhibit. Soon D’Agosta, Margo, and all the guests find themselves prey to an unstoppable monster who will leave the museum in bloodshed.

Director Peter Hyams does an exceptional job with translating the screenplay by Amy Holden Jones, John Raffo, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver as the film explores faith in the idea of “luck” through D’Agosta verses that of “practicality” through Margo. Neither view is deemed the better as the film thematically tries to link the two as if they are both needed at the same time. Hyams is also the cinematographer on the film (as he is on most of his films) and he is just at home in the horror genre as the action genre for which he is best known.

The Relic may seem like a film that has come and gone but it should never be forgotten.
