Ace Novelist Shelley Halima's Newest "Blinding Mirror" Is Brilliant Dwight Hobbes
MN Spokesman-Recorder Novelist Shelley Halima is, to say least, gifted. Her word flow; imagery and immediacy engage, holding you like she had a hand on your arm. It's easy to find yourself thoroughly engrossed while reading Azucar Moreno, Los Morenos or Blinding Mirror, ignoring the phone, raptly turning pages. Azucar Moreno made the top 100 Amazon best sellers in Latino books and is in pre-production as a film for Halima's Indie Gypsy Productions. Among the cast members are Janet Hubert (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), and emerging L.A. stage and television actor Jo Mani (Pastor Jones). There's a local connection with Twin Cities actor Bill Borea (Planet Fall) having signed on and myself in a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance. The story rocks, basically a Living Single or Friends-style romp set in one of Detroit's Puerto Rican neighborhoods. Los Morenos is a delightful sequel. Now, Shelley Halima has switched gears with Blinding Mirror, eschewing frivolity for dark drama. She uses the same tools — fluid, image-rich storytelling — but instead of tickling you in the ribs, Halima nails your gut with this tragic tour de force. Blinding Mirror (Indie Gypsy Publications) brings us Oliva Magdalena Delgado, a decent-minded young lady born to indecent parents in a California barrio. It follows Olivia through an emotionally tortured life that sees attain her bitterly determined goal, material success, only to endure a cruel price tag: unending heartbreak, some undeserved, some of it exactly what her hand called for. The climax kills in cold blood, leaving you staring into space, ready to tell a friend, family member, anybody who'll listen, that they have to read this book. This author, whose fascinating work authentically creates Latino life, happens to be Black. Why? "I blame my contrary personality", Halima readily states with wry humor. "If everyone goes to the left, I'm checking out the right. I love [defying] the old saying, "write what you know." It's far more challenging to write about characters who don't share my ethnicity, background or even sexuality. If I, a straight black woman from a blue-collar family, can write [about] a wealthy lesbian Maltese-Mestizo — there's nothing better. As a minority writer, you often feel pressure to write within a box. I want to bust that box open. Besides, If James Patterson and other white authors can write about characters who don't share their ethnicity, minority writers [can] do the same." Her own ethnicity is what she calls a bunch of mixed fruit in the family tree. She's black. And chose the name Halima as part of her nom de plume because she likes its Swahili meaning, which means kind, gentle soul. "I couldn't find the Swahili equivalent to "hell on wheels."" After crafting two well-received, light-hearted novels, what prompted Blinding Mirrors? "Again, I wanted to do something unexpected [to] go in a different direction. I wanted to create a character who was so empty inside that she constantly tried to fill that space with material things. And this leads her on a path that not only destroys her life, but [also] the lives of those closest to her." Why, the question must be asked, wasn't writing Azucar Moreno and seeing it succeed enough? What would moved Halima, upon prevailing at one very risky artform, take on the crapshoot prospects of cinema, to make the movie version, Azucar? She doesn't miss a beat in answering, "I always saw [the characters] coming to life on the screen. On top of that, so many people have written to me saying how they'd love to see the characters on film." What next? "I recently launched Indie Gypsy Productions. Right now, my main focus in addition to Blinding Mirror is to finish up some screenplays. I will also begin to publish other authors late next year and will put out a call for submissions for novels as well as two anthologies: one for erotica, the other for horror and fiction, and speculative fiction. Works of horror, science fiction, and fantasy. [But also] embracing works that don't fit neatly into genres: Tarzan, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle…The Twilight Zone, Edgar Allen Poe — tales that [are] labeled simply as "weird" or "adventure" or "amazing" because there was no proper place to put them." In other words she intends to stay busy. "Yes."
