Collecting baseball cards has been a great pastime for both young and old for a very long time. The hobby is so popular that there is a special industry now taking care of such collections. Initially, there was the Bowman which dominated the baseball cards world, but in 1952 with the introduction of Topps baseball cards, this soon changed. During that particular year there were many young players who captured the hearts of baseball enthusiasts, such as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle.
If you want the best -- here are five steps that would get you the best baseball cards for your collection:
1. Research for resources -- there are many shops that specialize in these types of cards. You need to find the best sources in terms of authenticity and price. There are specialized websites that point you to the best source for the card you are searching for but it is in your best interest to check and re-check each site's credentials before you decide to buy anything.
2. An auction of cards -- another great place to look for collectibles is an auction site. There are plenty such sites on the Net which will offer you superb deals. Once again, however you will have to check carefully for the authenticity and credentials before you commit to payment. It is a good idea to check several reputable websites for reference or as a starting point.
3. Baseball cards shows -- many states have baseball cards enthusiasts who hold periodic shows. Such shows besides being a huge pleasure to see; are also the source of some wonderful collectibles and vintage cards. Not only you will find many people selling the cards you would be searching for, you would also draw inspiration from such people to organize your own shows.
4. Exchange with others, find out people, online and offline who would like to trade or exchange cards with you. For online interaction you need to have your cards scanned and neatly referenced so anyone could look through your collection and seek out something that interests them before accepting your trade or exchange offer. Do not insist on mint quality cards, you will rarely get such cards. Look for the ones that are missing and do not bother for their condition. In fact, the older they are the more difficult it would be for you to get them in excellent condition -- yet these are the ones which would be most valuable. 5. Become part of baseball fan forums -- there are plenty out there on the Net. Become a member to as many as you can. It is here you will meet people who love this game and most of them would have some or other type collection of cards. You can gather a wealth of information from such forums as you will meet with fans of baseball fans that live all over the globe with access to an unbelievable chain of information.

In truth Topps did actually produce sports cards in 1948, they were referred to as 1948 Topps Magic Cards, and depicted baseball, football, basketball and other popular figures of the 40's. These cards included pictures of Babe Ruth Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig and other members of the Hall of Fame, but unfortunately there is not a record of a Robin Roberts released in this set. The set is not very popular to collectors and the scarcity of the set and individual cards make it hard to price. If you were to find a Babe Ruth card for example in VG or excellent condition it might only be worth around 20 or 30 dollars. I have been a collector for more then 30 years and have only seen a handful at shows and/ or online.
