What was the attitude of the american people during the vietnam war?
Here is the full question (more detailed): did the attitudes and policies of the united states government regarding war in Vietnam (1965-1975) reflect the attitudes of the american people during the time of the war? Why or why not? Please answer as best as you can!
-at the start most americans supported the war because they wanted to contain communism and believed that the US was doing the right thing for the Vietnamese people
-newspaper reports, photos etc shocked the US public, for example the photo of a young girl who tore off her burning clothes and ran from a napalm attack
-the 1968 Tet offensive marked a turning point in US public opinion on the war. People wanted to know why the Viet Cong had been able to launch a major offensive when the US was pouring money and troops into Vietnam, and why so many innocent civilians had been killed.
-This made the peace movement gather momentum. Draft dodging, student protests- "Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?".
-Then there was the utterly horrific Mai Lai massacre. This deeply shocked the US public and triggered the largest political protest in US history. By this point US public opinion was overwhelmingly against the war.
I would say that initially the gov did represent the peoples attitudes because most wanted to go to war. But few americans agreed with methods like chemical weapons and the gov kept using them. The peace movement was big after Tet but the gov didn't really change anything because of it. It wasn't until after the Mai lai massacre that the gov decided to draw out, as the vast majority of the public wanted them to.
hope that helps
